What happens when you follow “all the rules” and are still unfulfilled? What happens when the 6 figure salary, family, dog, and dream car doesn’t come immediately? Does it mean you’re a failure because you get in your field and realize it isn’t all what its cracked up to be? The pressure of society can become smothering. Even worse, it can have you living a mundane and unfulfilled life. But we have the power to choose!
Imagine the crossroad I was at when I graduated with an MBA and wasn’t too enthused about corporate America? Or the even bigger crossroad after moving to Atlanta and teaching two years and realizing I wanted more? But Glo you’re a great teacher! Glo you’re a great business woman…just get this money…they said.
People called me crazy and whispered their displeasures with my decision. It did come with great sacrifice but with an even greater reward. It required a huge leap of faith and readjusting what I defined as purpose and happiness.
Although it was an extremely trying time and hard decision to make..I chose myself…I chose what happiness looked like TO ME! I could care less if society agreed or not. I now go to sleep with a peace of mind and that is priceless. Do not be afraid to take risks…the rewards are far greater. Don’t ever allow the judgement of others keep you from the fulfilling of self.
Glo how did you do it?
First, I prayed. Real long. Real hard. For a long time.
Then, I made plans to take care of finances and to determine what I wanted next.
After, that…I worked hard to ensure that I wasn’t just wishing, but doing something. I applied and prepared and went on more interviews that a little bit. I also stayed busy and remained productive (Hello CULTURALISTA!)
Finally, I trusted that everything would work out and woke up every day with that mindset and WORKED for towards that.
During this time, it was important to have a STRONG CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE: People who were actually uplifting you and supporting your vision. Be careful of the intentions of others. Some just are around to get the scoop and keep tabs.
It is important to BE INTENTIONAL: Be intentional about the company you keep and how you spend your time. BE INTENTIONAL about what you allow people to speak over you. Dream killers are wack; BUT you do need TRUTH TELLERS around you.
It is important to BE FAITHFUL: to your dreams, to the vision, to yourself. It is so easy to become unfocused and frustrated with the process, but you have to see it through.
It is important to BE FLEXIBLE: just because the dream doesn’t manifest the way you envisioned, DOES NOT mean it will not manifest.
Just be reminded that as long as you live with a life WITH purpose…your purpose will be revealed. Don't get too caught up if you aren't sure quite yet. Also, that it is up to YOU to choose what happiness looks and feels. If you wait around for it to happen, it never will. You are already enough to complete the task because God qualified you when he created you. God is the author, but you are the narrator, determine the way you want the the story to be told! Your perspective will be the difference bewteen success and failure. SO here's to new beginnings, determining life on your own terms, and CHOOSING HAPPY! No longer about the NOW WHAT...but THIS IS WHAT'S NEXT....
